Best Moving Companies in Reno, NV (2026 Guide)

If you are moving in the Reno and Sparks area, you might face steep driveways in the foothills, winter weather on the passes, or an elevation rise up to Lake Tahoe. The right moving company can make yours a stress-free move, or at least a lot less stressful than it might otherwise be.

We have worked with moving companies across the country. We know what separates a great mover from one that just owns a truck. Below, we share some of the moving companies serving Reno today, what each one offers, and how to check any mover before you sign a contract.

A quick note on transparency: Sagebrush Movers is a member of the Preferred Movers Network. We included them because we know their work, and we want to be upfront about that relationship. Everything else on this list comes from each company’s own website and public review sites. Always do your own homework before you book.

How We Chose These Reno Movers

We looked for moving companies that check the boxes most families care about:

  • Local presence. A real base in the Reno and Sparks area, not a national call center that sells your job to someone else.
  • Proper licensing. A U.S. DOT number for moves that cross state lines, and Nevada authority for moves within the state.
  • Strong public reviews. A steady record on Google and Yelp, not just a handful of old ratings.
  • Clear services. Easy to understand what the company does, from local moves to long-distance, packing and specialty items.

This list is not ranked, and it is not a complete list of every mover in Reno. Review counts and ratings change all the time, so check each company’s current profiles before you decide.

How to Check a Reno Mover Before You Book

No matter which company you choose, take a few minutes to check it out. It is the best way to avoid a bad experience.

Know who licenses Nevada movers

The rules depend on where you are going. For moves that stay inside Nevada, state and local authorities are in charge. For moves that cross state lines, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is in charge, and the mover needs a U.S. DOT number.

In Nevada, the Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) oversees household goods movers. The NTA suggests getting a list of certified local movers straight from the agency. Its Reno office number is (775) 688-2800.

Follow the NTA’s moving tips

The Nevada Transportation Authority recommends that you:

  • Get two or more estimates based on an accurate assessment of your belongings. You are entitled to a written, binding estimate, and the mover cannot charge more unless you ask for extra services and agree to pay for them.
  • Ask about insurance options. You may need to buy extra coverage to get full replacement value for lost or damaged items.
  • Put everything in writing. Your contract should spell out what the mover will do and what you will do yourself, plus how and when you will pay.
  • Track your items. Use an inventory sheet when your goods are loaded, and check them again when they come off the truck.

Watch for red flags

The FMCSA warns about “rogue movers” that give a low price, then hold your things hostage for more money. Walk away if a mover:

  • Gives an estimate over the phone or online without seeing your belongings
  • Demands cash or a large deposit before the move
  • Has no local address or licensing information on its website
  • Answers the phone with a generic “Movers” instead of a company name
  • Shows up on moving day in a rental truck instead of a company truck

Frequently Asked Questions

Who regulates moving companies in Reno?

It depends on the move. The Nevada Transportation Authority (NTA) oversees household goods movers working inside Nevada. For moves that cross state lines, the FMCSA is in charge, and the mover must have a U.S. DOT number.

Can a Nevada mover charge more than the estimate?

Not on a written, binding estimate. The NTA says charges cannot go over the estimate unless you request extra services and agree to pay for them.

What is the 110 percent rule?

For moves from one state to another, professional movers must deliver your goods for no more than 10% above the price of a nonbinding estimate.

Are my belongings fully covered if something breaks?

Not always. For interstate moves, the basic valuation coverage the mover provides pays no more than 60 cents per pound per item. Ask about extra coverage for valuable items.

Where can I file a complaint about a mover?

Start with the moving company’s supervisor. If that does not work, contact the NTA for moves within the state. For interstate moves, you can file a complaint with the FMCSA at 1-888-368-7238.
